World No Tobacco Day "EMPOWER IAS"

Context: 

  • As per the Global Burden of Disease study, till 2019, India had the second-highest number of tobacco consumers from ages 15-24 (nearly 2 crore).

 

World No Tobacco Day:

  • Observed on May 31. 
  • For the year 2021 the theme for World No Tobacco Day was ‘Commit to Quit’.
  • It is celebrated every year to inform the public on the dangers of using tobacco,  the business practices of tobacco companies and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.

 

Global burden of Disease Study:

  • It is the most comprehensive worldwide observational epidemiological study to date that is produced with the input of 3,676 collaborators from 146 countries and territories.
  • Examining trends from 1990 to the present and making comparisons across populations enables understanding of the changing health challenges facing people across the world in the 21st century. 
  • It provides a tool to quantify health loss from hundreds of diseases, injuries, and risk factors, so that health systems can be improved and disparities can be eliminated.

 

National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS):

  • It is a medical institution located in Bangalore, Karnataka. It is the apex centre for mental health and neuroscience education in the country and operates autonomously.
